Question
Hi I wonder if you could advise me please I have a chinese crested powderpuff which I normally hand cut (not experienced so does not always look great) and it takes such a long time, I would like to try clippers and I was wondering if you could advise me which clippers would cut his coat as it is very soft, although I would not want it too short, thanks very much, Julie

Answer
Hi Julie,
Powderpuffs can be groomed in a puppy-cut like maltese, shitzu or coated breeds that have continuos hair growth. That is usually accomplished by using clippers and finishing with scissors.
Oster, Andis, Geib, Laube all make clippers that you can buy blade attachments that will cut the desired length. They usually come with one blade- a #10 and there are other blades you can purchase that leave up to about a half inch of hair. Then there are the plastic snap ons  (there is one company that makes them in in metal) that fit over the shorter blades and can leave much more length. You must, however, have the coat completely free of matts and tangles or the the blades for longer lengths will not pass though the hair. That's the most important advice I can give you. Follow the direction the hair grows and don't cut against the growth.
You may want to see a video of which there are many on the internet- just type your breed and how to in the search engine.

good luck
