Trimming facial hair

Hello,

I have a grooming question for my Maltipoo.  I want to trim his tear stained hairs that are underneath his eyes.  He obviously gets nervous and squirms when the scissors get near his face.  What are your techniques when trimming facial hair?

talk nice, give treats, and have a steady hand. Use blunt end scissors or thinning shears. If he jerks around too much take some hair from his upper and lower lips twist it together to keep the head still.
Tell him to behave and be gentle- lots of praise for a single snip. It's an exercise in patience. Gotta be careful.
