QuestionMy mom's two dogs (chow/shepherd and australian/german shepherd) both usually end up in the tub following even the quickest trips outside in wet weather, as their paws carry so much mud inside. A friend suggested trimming away the long hair (up to 2 1/2 inches) growing in between the pads on their feet. As my mom doesn't use a groomer whether this is advice is safe to follow. Will trimming said fur harm her dogs? If safe, how much should be trimmed off?
AnswerHi Katelyn,
It is customary for a groomer to routinely trim the hair between the pads of the paw. We normally use a clipper as it is usually safer. Use a safety scissor if you attempt it on your own. Often there is a matt growing there and it needs to be shaved out and is mostly dried mud and hair.
Shaving the paws is not necessary if you clean between the pads.
A large spray bottle filled with waterless shampoo can be kept by the door and sprayed directly on the paw and towel dried- this is then an option.
Have it done once by a professional groomer to show you how- hands on experience i the best teacher.
