my dogs odor

Question
My dog is medium sized and for the most part is outside.  We bring him in at night and when it is really cold.  His coat has a very bad odor.  I can't say that it smells like feces but it sure doesn't smell any better than that.  What could be causing this.  In the summer we would take him to the river to play ball so have not had him to a groomer.  I hesitate to take him in the winter because he is still outside a great deal and I'm not sure it would do any good, but I'm willing to try anything.  He eats med-i-cal dog food that we et from the vet.  He is on medication for epilepsy but hasn't had a seizure for over a year.
Thanks

Answer
Dear Kimberly,
Well from what you tell me it sounds like your dog needs a really good hot bath with some heavy scrubbing.
If you take him to a groomer they will make sure he is completely dry before you bring him home if that is a concern for you.
Brining him to the river to play ball is great exercise and I'm sure he loves it. But...there is a possibility that
he picked up a bacteria while there and could be causing the smell.
If a good grooming doesn't do the trick then take him to the vet for a skin scrape biopsy. Just to rule it out ...cause if it is the cause he will more than likely need antibiotics.
Even if he is an outside dog he should be groomed every 8
weeks or so for good health upkeep. Especially if he is going in the river often.
I would make an appointment ASAP, but don't get upset if it's a few week wait. DEC. is one of our busiest months.
I hope I have been of some help. Good luck and God Bless!
