buying dog grooming clippers

Question
It is time for me to buy new dog clippers.  When I bought the last ones, i knew nothing about dog clippers and haven't learned much since.  My dog is a mixed breed with a very thick, medium length coat. She loves getting clipped.  What is the difference in the high speed (5000-7000 spm) and the lower speed (2,000-4000 spm)models.  And what is the best motor type to use?

Answer
I highly recommend the Andis AGC line of clippers.  These come in a couple of body styles, colors and speed options.  The square body style is the older model, the red round ones are newer, and the silver or blue are the newest.  There are minor differences between them but any will work.  Because you have a very thick coated dog you'll be happier with the two speed clippers.  The reason is that the higher speed will get through her coat much easier.  The lower speed is likely to get gummed up and make your blades hot faster.  It is useful for sensitive areas such as under arms and private areas.  To be honest I never really studied RPMs and motor types.  I just know that Oster clippers are loud, heavy and awkward in my hands.  I've heard they are more durable and don't need nearly as much maintenance.  Laube clippers are said to be excellent, easy to use and durable but they're twice as expensive too.  I've used Andis my entire career and have never had cause to switch.  Don't bother with the wal-mart specials.  You don't even get what you pay for.  Try looking on ebay or contacting some of the local groom shops to see if anyone has upgraded and is wanting to sell their used pair.  You can also ask them for the number to a local sharpener who may have some clippers he's re-furbed.  Good luck and happy grooming!
