Question
QUESTION: i am about to purchase some dog grooming clippers.  My dog is a mixed breed with a very thick, medium length coat.  I need to know the difference between the high speed (5000-8000 spm) and lower speed clippers.  Which is better for my dog's coat.  And what type of motor is better?

ANSWER: It is more likely you will do better with a high speed for a thick coat. If you are looking just to shave down the coat then you better learn how to use the machine and get the proper blade. Most usually come with # 10 blade which shaves it down to the skin. Not attractive especially the first time you try it. Better to go with a #7 or 5 which leaves more hair but be careful as they can pinch/tear the skin.
If you bathe and dry the hair first  it wiil stand up and be easier to get a smoother cut, also better for the life of the blade

QUESTION: What type of motor is better ?

Answer
the stronger motor will work better for a heavy coat but they tend to run hot after a about 15-20 minutes so frequent blade changes are necessary to keep from burning the dog's skin if it is to be a short haircut. 2 blades should be enough just switch them as they get hot.
good luck!
