should I shave my pug?

Question
I recently adopted a 5-year-old fawn pug and, like all pugs, she's taking the normal summer heat hard. Every time it gets over 80-85 degrees, I cut back her walks during daytime hours, make sure she gets air conditioning, and keep water always handy. That's fine and she's comfortable but she still pants a lot whenever we're outside even if just for a few minutes. A friend recommended shaving her fur to keep her more comfortable. My research is pulling up mixed responses -- some say a pug's coat helps keep them cool in hot weather and that it should never be shaved. Others say that as long as you protect your pug from sunburn and razor burn, a summer shave will keep your pug much much more comfortable. I'm not sure. Any advice?

Answer
Leslie,
Summer shave a pug? NO, no and less you misunderstand me, no.
All dogs pant because that is how they cool themselves off (especially short nose breeds). If it is too hot- leave your dog home! They don't need to spend hours outside in the heat! If you MUST take her out in the heat carry ice packs and apply them directly between the front legs where the heart can pump the cool blood to the extremities.
I don't think I have ever heard of anything so unkind as shaving a pug. Their coat is protection from the elements.
sorry but I can't be more adamant. How unnatural.
