Answer
HI
Congrats on your Yorkie!  Yorkies come in different sizes, colors and hair types so the people who tell you that he doesn't look like a Yorkie, well, unless the are dog professionals or breeders, don't listen to them. I am sure he is very cute!
Yorkies coats change during the first 2 years of life. Most of the changes occur before they are 1 1/2 years old, but don't' start changing til they are about 6 months. So from 6 months to a year, he'll change A LOT!
They generally start out very black and dark red. They change to silver and tan.  A few keep the black but the red changes to tan, a few keep the red, but the black changes to a blondish color, (those are really pretty), but your standard color for an adult is silver and tan, with varying degrees of color strength, (that is some are more faded looking, and some are stronger colors).

Some yorkies do have coarse hair, the texture isn't really a concern unless you are showing.  If you show your dog, it should have very fine straight hair.  But for a pet,  it should be straight but some have a little bit of wave to them.
Some of the really thick, almost curly ones are hard to take care of, but the course ones sometimes are really beautiful because the hair never looks oily, like the very fine coated ones. (You know, baby fine texture of hair).

The ears should stand up, if they do not, get the hair clipped off the tips and maybe you can get them to stand up. Do not leave the long hair on the tips of the ears, it will break the cartilage and they ears will never stand up.

Your dog should have a short tail, which he carries straight up or out behind him when he is happy.  He should have no white on him at all.

Don't' worry about what your friends say, love him and he will love you, and I hope he is the best pet you ever have!
