Scottish Terrier Grooming Disaster

Question
Hallo, I have an eight month old - previously cute as pie- Scottish Terrier. I live in Australia where it is very hot in summer, so for this reason only took him to a Groomer. I didn't request the full Scottie style but stressed that i wanted him scruffy but essentially with less hair for his comfort. they give him back to me looking like a very odd kind of schnauzer, I nearly cried, devastated would be the only fitting expression. He seems to hate the new cut as well, so much for his comfort. I am just wondering how long it will take before he has a coat again that looks something like it did before. She said she used the longest blade clippers, if that information helps. Thanks, Megan.

Answer
Megan - you had the dog's best interest at heart and that was good to start. In 2-3 years you will be doing this knowing better what to expect. It WILL grow back - in fact it NEVER stops growing. It gets long, smelly, tangled and dirty. Scottties are one of the most personable as well as stubborn and ornry breeds out there. They are adorable time wasters as puppies and if you don't get a hold of the energy they can become "Head of Household" real quick. They are notorious in the grooming world as one of the more difficult breeds to handle. They hate their feet touched, they don't like being messy, and they have NO fear- so you better...:-)
Scottie hair is supposed to be plucked but there are so few people out there doing this for pets that all you find are people that clipper them. When they are plucked it is usually just the back of the neck and the back- the furnishings are left and the head and throat and ears are shaved close. They are not a dog that does well "scruffy" as cute as it looks as a puppy- it just doesn't stay that way and black/dark dogs really don't do well in the heat. Scotties have to be watched carefully around water because they are top heavy and those short legs have a tough time keeping them afloat for long. They may like to paddle around in a baby pool but if you try to brush them out later and you may be in for a fight.
Puppie cut styling has never been an a big idea for that breed so it is going to be tough to replicate that cutie pie look as he grows older and the coat continues to grow, and grow, and grow.... but when it has been plucked - the natural way for the coat to be maintained, it actually stops growing and needs to be pulled out by the root because it is dead and needs to be pulled out in order for the new coat to grow back. It grows back a completely different texture. You will find that coat sheds unlike a clippered coat- but only twice a year.
Puppies are only puppies a short time and they really change after 12-14 months so look at some of the different ways to groom him but my best advice to you if you are not interested in the traditional Scottie pattern is to shave him short for the summer and then let it grow the rest of the year with monthly maintenance of a bath, blowout, and basic sanitary trimming. He will be cute and shaggy but you must get him brushed out in between.
He will be a mess again in about 8-10 weeks. I always advise groomers to do less than more because you can always take more off but you can't put it back on....
He most likely is just not happy being hot more than anything- keep him indoors, out and of the  sun. good luck!
