Husky hair clipping

Question
I've just read that Husky dogs don't need clipping or cutting.  The groomer I just PAID clipped my Husky to the 9s!  I also read a report that PetSmart had done the same thing with a Husky.  Sven the Husky doesn't seem to mind it, and I was concerned about his scratching and biting himself, but I'm reading it will take months to grow out again.  How long will it take?  Sven is inside most of the time, but loves the winter cold and snow.  Should I try Super 14 for skin and coat health?

Answer
Hi Julie,

Sorry about the delay, I was out of town. When you say to the "9s" I am assuming that they shaved Sven all the way down. Husky's really should not be shaved all the way down. They are a double coated breed, which means they have a light undercoat and a more thick top coat. The undercoat actually is used like insulation. What I mean is that it protects the dog from heat and cold and also sunburn. It works just like insulation in a wall. Air circulates through the soft undercoat keeping them warm and or cool. When you remove it you are removing their protection. That being said some people do shave dogs all the way down usually because they can't stand all the hair shedding everywhere. It will take a while for it to grow back and sometimes it won't grow back quite the same. Once the temperature drops it should trigger the hair to start growing more rapidly. He should be pretty filled out in a few months from when he got clipped. I am not familiar with Super 14 but if it a spray on type conditioner I think it would work just fine. I shaved my German Shepherd type dog down in May and she has her full coat back now. I hope I answered your question to your liking. Thank you.
