Question
Hi,
I have a Newfie pup and I am concerned about the heat and her coat.  I know as a puppy she still does not have her adult coat, but I want to groom her down to deal with the heat a bit.  What are the facts about Newfies and their fur??  I once read that they should never get shaved and that they shouldn't get a "summer cut" until they have their adult coat in.  Is this true?

Answer
hello Patricia
YES!! this is very true! do NOT give your Newfie a summer cut. It destroys the coat and the coat will never be the same after shaving. Even once they have their adult coat is in, it is never recommended in shaving any dog with an undercoat. To control the heat, make sure you are brushing your dog regularily and taking it to the groomer often for a good bath and blow out, to keep the lose shedding undercoat away. You could shave a small strip down the middle of the stomach, because it really doesnt matter to most people if that area of hair gets destroyed, just so the dog can lay on cool pavement or a cement block to help cool it down. Make sure your dog has plenty of water and lots of shade in the heat as well.
