Question
I have a 5 month yorkie, is it true that she should not have a hair cut until she is a year old. Because her hair is still growing? She looks like a hairball. I brush her daily and she has had nails clipped.

Answer
If you are going to show your dog on the AKC Circuit this is considered the proper way to start off a professional show career. The hair needs to separated, oiled, paper wrapped and then banded to keep it from doing exactly what you are seeking relief from.
Frankly most people give their Yorkies the infamous "puppy cut" because it is so much more manageable.
Otherwise you are required to follow the same routine for the life of the dog. If you don't brush and comb this dog daily then it will become matted to the point you will need to have it shaved to the skin to remove the matts. The good news about that is that it grows back and you can then put your dog on an 8-10  week schedule and get it under control.
Always brush out your dog before a bath and blow dry it - with a pin brush, the kind with out the balls on the tips of the pins and an anti-static spray, to keep it from rolling around  and turning  the hair into dreadlocks.
Once you cut the hair, depending on the dog/coat- it may become a bulkier and more cotton like texture. This renders it much higher maintenance if you wish to longer again. High quality shampoos and conditioners are more important at that point as well.
It's all about the brushing and coming.
