bald spots after shaving a dog

Question
I have been grooming for 5 years. In that time 3 dogs, after being shaved, grew fur back with bald patches? I spoke to other groomers who stated this has happened to them but none really knows WHY?

Answer
Hi Debra,
This seems to happen to dogs who are not meant to have the coats shaved down. Mostly herding and working groups as well as the mixes made up from those breeds. Toys like pomeranians and other double coats - under + guard- can have the same problem.
These animals should not be shaved but people are basically uneducated and uninformed as to the origins of these dogs and the reason they have the particular kind of coat, It helps insulate the heat and cold and molts in the appropriate season. Never meant to be shaved. Why it doesn't grow back is puzzling but tells you something. It's not natural. Mostly happens to dogs that are meant to live outside and would normally shed their coats by rubbing against trees and brambles making way for new growth.
You should always try to educate the client that while it may seem like a good idea it defeats natures natural protection and could ruin the coat. Better to have regular maintenance than OAY shave downs.
If you would like to get some other opinions about this you should check out some professional grooming blogs where there are lots of answers from other professionals  like yourself. Hope this helps a little
good luck
