QuestionIs there a hair cut for poms when the weather is hot?Sometimes it's 90 + here in salt lake city utah.
AnswerThere are a couple of options.
You can cut the dog quite short, we do several that way and the owners love it. It is done by using a 7F and scissoring the britches and tail and the feathering around the head. It is VERY cute and sporty looking, the hair ends up being about the same length as the fronts of your dogs legs. You can try to make it alittle longer, like the hair on top of the head by using a 5F, but that is very difficult to do and often leaves lines in the coat.If you have a great stylist, it looks really nice. Make sure the groomer/stylist knows what to look for when they start the haircut so it is finished well. Also your dog must be calm and well behaved and stand still for a smooth haircut.
The other thing you can do is take a #1 blade guard and shorten the long stuff, comb out the undercoat as much as possible, shave the belly, underarms and thin the neck area for coolness. It is harder to do, and sometimes doesn't help too much.
Be advised the coat may take a year to grow all the way back in, so have it done now so it will look nice by Christmas, if you want it full and fluffy.
