I would not reccomend shaving a chow chows coat, because it can be extremely damaging on the coat. If you are shaving the dog to "cool it down" for summer, it will not cool the dog down. It will increase the chances of sunburn, and the dog wont be able to regulate his own body temperature, therefore making the dog hotter for summer, than cooler. Basically the only time I would say one of these dogs needs to be shaved, is if its matted, but even then sometimes, its just really compact undercoat.
