Puppy Ear Cleaning

Question
Hello, I have a 10 weeks old Shih Tzu. When I bought her home 2 weeks ago, she had a slight ear infection. The vet gave me ointment to put in her ears. My problem is I have a very hard time to get her to stay still for me to clean the ears and put in the ointment. She struggles with me every single time. Even with the help of my husband, we still can't get her to stay. Is there a way for me to get her to stay still for the ear cleaning process?

Answer
They are squiggly little things, right? Unfortunately you have to get that stuff in there so you must teach the baby to trust you. Spend some time stroking and playing gently with her ears. Lift them up  and handle them frequently, same with the paws and teeth. She needs to get used to being handled.
Puppies are mostly cartilage so that is why the mother picks them up by the scruff of the neck and dangles them into submission. You need to learn that procedure. They go kind of limp when you do that which is a good time to inject the ointment. It may take 2 (one to dangle one to administer) of you to do this but if you are gentle after a few times it won't feel so bad once the ointment works and she should be more trusting of you.
