Leopard Gecko Incubator?

Question
My leopard geckos will be laying eggs in a few days and I want to know, bottom line, what is the best way to incubate their eggs. I have heard conflicting information in forums from: build your own, buy a HovaBator, or buy Kemp's reptile incubator.

Answer
Hi Rusty, I have used a homemade one for my personal collection  for years and a hovabator at work. The other redfoot breeder I work with has had his hovabator running constantly for years now.  I'm not familiar with the Kemp's. Incubating eggs is not that complicated. A constant, reliable temperature is the key. To that end it pays to invest in a good quality aquarium heater for the homemade style or a good thermostat if you are going the heat tape method. Cheaper, less reliable equipment that allows the temp. to waiver and spike is your enemy. I like my homemade one because a) it works and b) I can dismantle it when I don't need it. If you plan to get into breeding on a regular basis then I would say invest in the hovabator but if this is a one-shot deal with your leos then go with a homemade. With whatever you choose, set it up at least a few days prior to needing it to get the temp. set and stabilized. Use a thermometer with an external probe so you can monitor the temperature without opening the incubator. Good luck with your eggs.
