Question
Last week my 10 month old water dragon had a run in with the boyfriends cat!!! I know it could have been A LOT worse. but the run down is he got a little scratched up and broke his leg. He is being treated for this by an excellent veterinarian. They ended up doing surgery and pinning the fractured leg. he's doing well. alert (a little depressed being in a much smaller tank due to the activity level needing to be severely decreased) but otherwise OK his appetite isn't the greatest but he does like to take his antibiotics and pain medication. My question is.. he got a scratch on top of his head near his "third eye" we were concerned if this could be detrimental to him. I know they use this "third eye" to thermoregulate. But if it is indeed damaged should we be concerned. He has a 4 ft tall 4ft wide and 2 feet deep cage that he lives in but we put a 10 gallon tank in the bottom to keep him confined for his healing duration. temps are 80-85 during the day, 70-75 at night, humidity is up to 70-80% . Basking area is around 90-95 but he's not much into basking and climbing at this point. We have a 160 watt mercury vapor bulb on in the daytime and at night a ceramic heat emitter to keep the temps up in his cage.his color which is usually a bright lime green he's kinds brownish. (im assuming because of the stress from his surgery and the whole ordeal)he is not eating on his own ( i made a slurry of calcium powder, crickets, meal worms, butter worms, and vegetable baby food mixed with pedialyte and coax him into eating it and he will eventually take about a full 1ml) but does drink water on his own. he pooped yesterday and it looked normal. I am just concerned to see if there is anything else I can do for him to make him more comfortable and if the "third eye" is injured is that an issue to be concerned about. He does have excellent care but like I said its just some concerns that the doctors tell me not to worry about. but im not tottally satisfied with that answer. and I have already spent over 700 dollars on this little guy and didnt want to take him back in for something they are not concerned with. Sorry for the long explanation but i appreciate all of your time!!!
Respectfully,
Autum

Answer
Hello Autum,

Wow that is impressive, you had a vet who fixed your dragon's leg.  Do you have any pictures of him?
Your tank set up sounds fine, no problem at all.
How badly is it injured?  That could affect his ability to register light & or brightness if it is damaged that badly.  He probably is not basking normally because he doesn't feel quite right, either.  I think the 3rd eye or parietal eye should heal up.  You can put some antibiotic ointment on it to help it heal more quickly.
Is he thermoregulating normally & basking as he should be right now?
I would continue with the baby food to help him since he has been injured right now.  Is he eating the insects willingly right now, or not at all?
What brand is your 160watt MVB?  How close is it to him?

I would keep him in the small tank until his leg is healed up right now so it restricts his movement.  When did the injury take place?
Yes, water dragons are more brownish if they are stressed.  Hopefully he will change back to his pretty green color soon, once he feels better & he is in his old tank.

Let me know how he is doing.
