Question
Unknow
Hi Diane,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. We dont currently have him confined, he was shooed out the back door of the warehouse and keeps periodically showing up. I would estimate him to be around 20 inches long, from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, and I "believe" it was a black tongue. I didnt notice him using it alot, moved very quickly, seemed very strong for his size. I hope this gives you more information. Ive attached another pic.
Thanks
Regina
AnswerHi Regina,
A few of my own comments: Are you interested in keeping the skink as a pet? If not, here is a link that you will be able to find help with finding a home or rescue to take him/her.
http://www.anapsid.org/societies/florida.html Thank you for caring enough to inquire about the needs of this reptile...

Information from inquiry:
Here is a basic care sheet provided by Edward A. Martinez
Here are some VERY basic guidelines to get the person started if they have no experience keeping BTS.(Blue Tongue Skinks)
1. DIET
The most important piece of advice: Variety is key in keeping a BTS healthy. They are omnivorous and need to eat a wide selection of foods. The best "meats" are worms of any sort, cockroaches, cooked lean chicken/beef. Crickets are worthless nutritionally.
Below are the best fruits/veggies, from the caresheet on the website.
Best Greens: Best Veggies: Best Fruit:
Collard Greens Spaghetti Squash Papaya
Turnip Greens Butternut Squash Fig
Mustard Greens Acorn Squash Raspberries
Dandelion Greens Hubbard Squash Mango
Endive Summer Squash
Escarole Scallop Squash
Cactus Pad/Leaf
Supplements are not necessary -- a varied diet is.
Make sure there is clean water available to drink at all times. Place the bowl in the cool end of the tank.
2. HOUSING
They don't need a huge space but it shouldn't be tiny, either. They must be housed alone. A cheap, old aquarium would work well. The minimum size tank I'd recommend would be about 3'x2' and about 18" high.
Provide at least a couple of hides that the skink's whole body can fit in.
3. TEMPERATURE
They do need a temperature gradient within the tank, so they should have a heat lamp at one end. Around 90-95 F would be a good temperature to aim for in the hot end of the tank. UV lights are not necessary. Do NOT use a heat rock ever.
4. HUMIDITY
Do not keep the tank humid. It should be fairly dry, but not in the arid zone either.
5. SUBSTRATE
For a beginner, I would use newspaper. It's easy and cheap to replace.
Finally, as there is tons more information on it, have the person read the entire caresheet a little bit at a time.
