Reptile Egg
Reptile Egg
QUESTION: I don't know if you can help me or not but I need help Identifying some reptile eggs. They are white, about half as long as a standard business card (rather large for reptile eggs), soft leathery shell, have little bumps (like goose pimples) all over them. I found a 2 foot long red rat snake less than 5 foot away from the eggs so the eggs might belong to it but they look too big to have come from this snake. The are a little bigger around than my thumb. I have attached a photo of one of the eggs to assist in Identification.

ANSWER: They look like snake eggs to me.  And red rat would fit.  How many were there?  2 foot is small, but not unheard of.

QUESTION: I thought they might belong to the red rat snake but I was not sure since the eggs were bigger around than the rat snake. There were six of them all together but I popped one open to see if I could find a fetus. There was nothing but yolk in it so maybe the baby had not formed yet. Would it be possible for a snake to lay eggs bigger around than they are? Also, How do you tell if a red rat snake is a boy or a girl snake?

Answer
Quit popping eggs!  LOL  Place the eggs in moist (not wet) vermiculite and incubate at or BELOW 88 degrees for 60 days.  If they turn any color but bright white they are no good.  They can lay eggs slightly bigger around than they are AND they look much skinnier right after laying.  Probing is the best method the determine sex, but when side by side a male rat snake would have a longer tail than the female.  Tail being defined as the portion behind the vent or cloaca.
