Question

lizard
I live on the island of St. Thomas and have noticed at least 9 different species of lizards. I have been trying to find their names but have been unsucessful of one in particular. Its body is mostly grey (turns dark brown or black when theartened). the end of its tail is black and it as three distinct black dots on it back and a red dewflap. Here is a picture. Please email me back at cjdisland@yaho.com

Answer
Hi Caryl,

He looks like a type of Anole, not the common ones kept as pets but their are SEVERAL species of Anole in the wild.

He looks a lot like a Green Anole pictured here:

They are usually green but have been known to look grey and they change to dark brown when stressed or agitated as you said.

They also have a red dewlap however the black end of his tail throws me off. It is likely that it's tail is not supposed to be black and is in fact infected (dry gangrene) but it does look like it is supposed to be that color.

Here are all the species:

There is a St. Thomas Anole....
(I am looking this up as I type)

It is also known as the "Barred Anole" but that doesn't look like him.

This is difficult :)

Ok I found an article on reptile life on "your" island.

http://bcrc.bio.umass.edu/vifishandwildlife/Wildlife/FinalPlan/3_4.pdf

It says there are 4 species of Anoles (that helps!)

Crested Anole
Grass Anole
Barred Anole
St. Croix Anole (only found on St. Croix island)

Which is very confusing because comparing pictures it doesnt look like any of them!! ha ha ok im going crazy now :D

There are only 11 species of lizards on those islands.

And since he doesnt appear to be one of the Anoles....
(looks most like a crested anole without the crest) but they have the black dots you descirbe...)
Perhaps...
he is still too young or something?

I dont know but maybe the last link I gave you with reptile information on the Virgin Islands will help you out.

Good luck
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
