Question
Snake
Snake
Hi I bought a California king snake last Wednesday and try told me that she was eating one pinky a week on Saturdays. So when I went back the next day I asked how you could tell if she was hungry they said he would start climbing her tank, which she had been doing since I brought her home they suggested I try feeding her when I got home (Friday) I fed her and she shed Sunday morning....the rest of the dy she was climbing the tank again so we decided to try another pinky which she goobled right up...I am wondering if this is ok for her and also how old she is she is approximately 8-10 inches long and at her thickest point about the width of a pencil
Thanks for your help

Answer
Snakes are opportunistic predators.  They will eat almost whenever they find food.  Your snake should eat about 5-7 days.  It should not go longer than say 15 days w/o food.  As the snake grows you should increase the size of the prey until as an adult it is eating small rats.  The prey should be about as big around as the snake is at the snake's biggest point.  CA Kings are very active snakes so the "climbing the cage" thing isn't going to be a good indicator.  Use a calendar!  LOL  Good Luck.
