Question

Is it dangerous?
My Husband has found several baby snakes over the last two days and I want to make sure they will not hurt our family. I have attached a picture we took it with a blackberry so if you need we have a better one it was just not ready at this point. I would appreciate if you could look at this and let me know what it is I live in New Mexico and rattlesnakes are present I want to keep my children safe.

Answer
Hi Sylene:

The snake is not venomous but I could not give you the species from the picture. If you could get a picture with the snake on a piece of paper, especially the face and upper body I will be glad to ID it for you. Do you live close to a creek or other body of water? It is either a subspecies of water snake or of the kingsnake family from what I can see but I can't give you anything more exact then that.  If there were ten born, I can tell you that nine of them will not see their sixth month birthday. cats, birds, other snake, and a host of other animals all eat baby snakes so 1 in ten survive.
Thank you for asking before you started killing them, you and your family are in a small category of people who actually think before destroying. You are to be commended, I wish there were more people like you, this would be a far better world.  If you need more information, send a picture as I stated and I will get right back to you.
PS add the area of the US you live in, that helps narrow down the choices.
