Question
My lizard pretty cool lil guy
My lizard pretty cool
QUESTION: Hi i just had a question i just purchased a male uromastyx three days ago " and he seems to be acting funny to me ? when i visited the pet store several times to get info on him and check him out he seem some what  active but now i have him home he basically sits in one area and does not move i have only seen him eat once i was told to give him a little warm  bath which perked him up but maybe half hour later he just sat their again could it be he is stressed out from the move ? If so what can i do to help my little buddy ? I'm also wondering about the heat I have the basking spot 100w light bulb inside and plan to get the UV light Tuesday but the temp on thermometer only says 95 ? He needs way hotter then that correct ? I went to purchase a heat rock they told me not to get it for the simple fact it will burn him ? If you could please ease my questions with some sort of knowledge would be great this is my first time owning  a lizard and I'm not sure if his behavior is normal or something I should worry about thank you

ANSWER: Hello Michelle,

Normally the will go through a brief relocation stress yes.  It may last from 1-2 weeks.
They are correct in the fact that you should not purchase a heat rock as it can malfunction & burn him.  What type of substrate are you using for him?  Tiles, sand, carpet?
What type of thermometer are you using to measure the temperatures with, a stick on type, a digital probe or a temp gun?
Yes, the basking temperatures need to range from 120-130 & a cooler end around 80 or so.  Which UVB are you planning on getting?  What type of basking light are you using?  I would highly recommend getting a halogen flood light because they are so bright & get hot.
How large is your tank?
What do you plan on feeding him?

Answer
Hello Michelle,

Great that he did eat for you.
The stick on type of thermometers are not accurate enough to be used for anything except for ambient temps or humidity.  So you will need to get a digital probe or a temp gun for better readings.
You can either get a Reptisun 10 flourescent tube, or you could opt for a mercury vapor bulb which puts out heat along with UVB.  The best ones are the Megaray or the T-rex active UV heat.  The flourescent tubes need to be replaced every 5-6 months while the MVB's last at least 1 year or a little longer.  Most pet stores know nothing about UVB lighting.  Please do not get any Reptiglo lights, Zilla or ESU lights, they are all cruddy.  Do not get any compact or coil lights, either.
You will need to add some beans & lentils for him too, they offer protein.  Also, alfalfa sprouts are good too.
You can get the Megaray from here:

The T-rex can be found here:

Or you can opt for the Solar Glo which is just about as good, & it is a mercury vapor bulb:  It is $25 so it is cheaper.

Here is the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb:

Let me know how things are going.
