Light for Bearded Dragons

Question
Could you tell me whether or not you recommend the Zilla Desert Series 50 Fluorescent Coil Bulb?  It appears to be a 20 Watt UVB bulb (which didn't seem that much to me) but my 5 month old beardie has been closing his eyes in the terrarium lately.  I have also bumped him up to a 150 watt basking bulb and noticed that he hasn't been basking directly under it.  I could switch him back down to a 100 watt basking light, but am more concerned that the Zilla UV light is hurting him.  It also seems to throw off a lot of heat.  Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Hello Melissa,

Unfortunately, you are correct in your conclusions.  The RZilla Tropical 50 series is not a good light, I hate to say.  Here is a link so you can read about the problems those lights have caused & why.  It is a light that emits low wavelength UVB which causes all sorts of health problems.  It can make them very ill, so definitely please turn off the UVB light now.

What are the temperatures in the tank?  What type of thermometer do you use, a stick on type, a digital probe or a temp gun?
What sized tank is he in?
The better UVB light to get is the Reptisun 10 tube bulb.  Here is a great site you can get it for a good price:

I would go ahead & turn the light off & just use a bright white basking light for now.  He will be fine for a week or two without UVB & that will allow time for his eyes to heal up.  He is probably dehydrated because of the bulb, too so try to give extra baths & oral fluids for a week or so, as well.

Let me know how he is doing.
