Question
Hi

I have a female uro weighting 160 grams and she is 1.5 years, she won't gain weight but has good fat reserve in her tail chunky legs. There is no vet for her closer then 3 hours away. Where can i find info on good weight by age and sex? Do you have any familiarity with Uro's.

Merci

Answer
Hi Malika,

There is quite a bit of size variation between the different species but from the numbers you gave I am going to assume that you have a Mali.

There is not a lot of references to weight and growth rates with Uros. Most of the weights quoted are the top numbers that a large specimen can potentially reach but don't reflect the average animal.

Uros can take 2 to 3 years to reach adult size in captivity. Malis average about 10 to 15 inches as adults and around 200 to 300 grams. The recommended minumum size for a breeding female is 10 inches and about 150 grams, so that gives you a general idea.

There is always going to be some variation with individual animals and of course a genetic component. Smaller parents will produce smaller offspring.

If her body condition is good and her fat stores look appropriate then that is really your best gauge of a healthy body weight.
