Question
QUESTION: Hello I have a green ig that is 13 months old. I took her out after I had
installed a timer for her light and found a small redish/rust colored spot
about a half a cm to a cm in diameter. It could be even smaller than that. It
was on her lower jaw just right by her mouth. She has just finished shedding
and am wondering if this is something serious...  She is being fed correctly
with the proper suppliments, alfalfa, vegies, greens and fruits. She is 20 in
long. What should I do about that spot on her lower jaw?

Also I have been trying to train her for a few weeks now and on about the
second week she would allow me to gently move my hand towards her in her
enclosure, but now for the past week or two she just darts around the cage
when I get to within a couple inches of her. Whats going on there? Thanks for
your help. I can send you a pic of that spot in the follow up email if you like...

Sincerely;

Jason Baker

ANSWER: Hello Jason,

Could you post a picture of that for me?  It could possibly be fungus maybe, I am not sure.
How long have you had her for, they do tend to be very skittish reptiles at first, but continue working with her.  They take some time to tame down for you.
You are going to need a much larger tank, one that is tall as they need climbing space.  She will get very large.
What type & brand of UVB light are you using, is it a flourescent tube bulb, or a compact or coil light?  Do you use a bright white basking light?
What is the humidity in the tank?
What are the temps at, & what type of thermometer do you use to measure the temps with?
Are you using calcium supplementation?
Also, please send me a picture of the tank, as well.
Let's see what we can do for her.

QUESTION: I will have one up on photobucket you can see within 12 hours. I have had her
since march 7th and know she of course is female and is approx 13 months
old. Her enclosure is 2x2x5ft. I am not sure of the brand of lights as these
were acquired from her previous owners.  It is a coil light. Yes I do. I am not
sure but I regularly mist her or take her for a soak in the tub.

Daylight temps between 85-96 and nocturnal temps are never below 70. I
have just a basic thermometer to measure the rooms temp, a probe
thermometer to measure basking and enclosure temps as well as an IR
thermometer gun to measure her core temp.

I will have pics up for you shortly within 12 hours of her enclosure, Angel
herself and the enclosure and all equipment. I don't however use calcium
suppliments as i keep strict tabs on her daily diet, from alfalfa to her collard
greens, green beans, bell pepper, dandelion greens, winter squashes and so
on. Thank you for your help.

for the pics.

ANSWER: Hello Jason,

Great I will look forward to seeing some pictures of her.
So the coil light is the UVB light correct?  If so, coil & compact lights are horrible lights & put out very little UVB.  They are very glaring on their eyes as well.  I would get a Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb for her UVB, it is much better & safer.

Good that you are using a digital probe & a temp gun to measure the temps with so they should be accurate.

She does need calcium supplementation.  She needs calcium 3 times per week.  She wont get enough calcium stricly from her food intake.  If she doesn't have the proper UVB lighting, she wont be able to synthesize D3 or absorb her calcium very well, either.

The enclosure is pretty good sized, & should be tall enough for her as she grows.

How is her jaw looking right now, is it still slightly discolored?

QUESTION: Tracie, Thanks for your help. THe pics are up on the url I gave you earlier. I
believe so...  Alright she will be started on calcium suppliments this week. Any
suggestion on a brand or is that not important?   She will eventually outgrow her
enclosure but by that time she will be free roaming.  It is still discolored. Its just
that one spot seen in the photos the rest of her looks great!

Answer
Hello Jason,

She is lovely.  :-))  The enclosure is good sized & looks nice.  Yeah I guess free roaming will be good!
Great you will start her on the calcium supplementation.  You can use Repcal calcium, Miner-All calcium, or Jurassical calcium.  As long as it is phosphorus free, that is what matters.
That spot is odd.  Are you sure that she did not scrape off a few scales?  I would put some antibiotic ointment on it daily to help keep it from getting infected if it is a scrape of some sort.  Perhaps she rubbed it when she shed.

Let me know how she is doing.
