sick skink?

Hi we have a skink, have had him for about 5 years or so. Anyways, he has "stuff" forming over his eyes, it sheds off when he sheds, but comes right back. My husband thought it was the bedding we were using sticking to his eyes, but after switching the bedding, he is still having this build up. I know the best thing to do would be to take him to the vet, but I am hoping I can get some insight and possibly help him on my own first. Thanks for your help as it is near impossible to find anything on the internet regarding anything more than habitat about a skink!

 I have had a few dragons with eye problems that were treated quite successfully by their vet.  Sensory organs should never be home treated in my opinion. But the best article on reptile eye issues that I've found in regards to reptiles is the following:
