Unknown Lizard Species
Can't identify the lizard that has created a habitat under my deck in Austin, TX.  I want to be sure the lizard is not a threat to my family.

Answer
Hi Steve,
Looks like a Texas spiny lizard. They won't harm your family...but as with all reptiles, both wild and captive and also many wild mammals, they may carry salmonella. As with any animal, proper hand washing always needs to be practiced.
With lizards in the wild, the great thing is they will get rid of most insects around your home which is a good thing to have happen.  Some of the larger lizards may even keep some rodents in check also.
Enjoy watching the lizard that has chosen under your deck!!
