leopard gecko with eye cap

Question
Hi, the details concerning my leopard gecko are below:

* 2 year old leopard gecko
* Has 1 eye cap also known as retained spectacle on the back end of her left eye
* The eye cap has been there for 2 weeks
* Removal via non-toxic jelly unsuccessful

I have a two year old female leopard gecko that seems to have a retained spectacle eye cap on her left eye.  She had a problem shedding near her eye and her eye has been this way for two weeks. She lives in a well maintained terrarium with another female leopard gecko and seems to be continuing to eat relatively well despite the eye cap.

We have been putting a non-toxic jelly on the eye cap with a q-tip for a about 2-3 days. After trying to gently pull it off it still won't. My question(s) are as follows:

How successful is the removal procedure at a DVM office and is it considered surgery. Is this process expensive and safe?

* How likely is it the gecko's eye will become infected
* Is the procedure to remove the eye cap expensive
* Are eye cap removals safe and effective
* Which herpetology specialists are best suited for this type of procedure

Thanks, and the help is much appreciated,

Concerned leopard gecko owner,

Answer
Hi Tanya,
Sorry about your problems with your leo.
I really cannot answer as to the risk of infection...that depends on too many factors...such as the vets method, the leos health, sanitary conditions of housing, etc.
As to expense, again, impossible for me to answer as vets charge different amounts in different states or areas.  It may be a simple office procedure especially if the leo cooperates.
Here are some links to finding a vet that can treat reptiles. Call those in your area and ask if they have treated leos with the same problem and don't be afraid to ask their success rate, etc.
To find a qualified vet in your area you can go to

http://www.arav.org/ECOMARAV/timssnet/amm/tnt_mdsearch.cfm
http://www.anapsid.org/vets/
Stuck shed, be it on a toe or an eye, should correct the problem and precautions need to be taken to do the best to prevent it from happening again.
Are you providing a proper humid hide for your leo?  If not, let me know.  I came across this link to share with you.
