Question
QUESTION: I have a leopard gecko who is about seven years old. i recently noticed he has a rather large crack at the base of his tail, where it connects to the body.the tissue inside is slightly protruding from the wound. a couple weeks ago my cat fell into the tank but immediately ran away. i am not sure if this is what caused the crack as i did not notice it right away. i am just looking for information on how to properly treat this?

ANSWER: Hello Amber,

Wow, that is too bad for your gecko.
You can use some antibiotic ointment for that area to help keep it from getting infected.  Also, there is a cream called thermazene, which is silver cream.  You could possibly find a silver type cream at a drug store up in Canada, too.
Do you have a loose substrate or a solid substrate?
Do you have any pictures of him & of the wound?

QUESTION: i am using paper towel as substrate. i will look into getting a cream like that as well. since i noticed the wound i have been applying neosporin (i read it helped) which does give it a shiny look in the picture i am attaching

ANSWER: Hello Amber,

Wow, poor tail.  That is good you are using paper towels for the substrate.  He may drop the tail, but you never know, maybe it will heal up.
Keep the ointment on that area on a daily basis & if you can find the silver cream, you can try that also.
Is he eating pretty well?

QUESTION: He is eating like normal and moving around like normal.I will look for that cream, and thank you so much for all the help

Answer
Hello Amber,

That is great he is eating normally & still moving around a lot then.
You should be able to find the silver cream at the drug store.  If not,
amazon.com  carries a product called thermazene, which is essentially
the same type of cream.

Let me know if you have more questions.
