Uromastyx problems

Question

Ramoth
I've recently rescued a pair of what I was told were Mali Uromastyx. I know they're Uros just not sure of subspecies. Both have severe scaring across thier bodies, thier stomach skin feels thicker than the rest, not sure if thata normal.  The male has really thick scales on his tail, like shed has acumulated. The female has patches on her tail where the scale surfaces have come off, leaving whitish patches that are soft to the touch. Its the female I'm more worried about. I'm putting up images on my devientArt page and attaching the best image of her tail.

Answer
Hi Crystal, Thanks for including those photos, that really helps. The white areas on the females tail still look typical of retained scales to me judging from the way the light is refracted off of them. The whiteness is usually typical and indicative of a layer of air between the new skin beneath and retained scales. That would also give them the appearance of feeling soft to the touch .I would try dabbing those areas with a moist cotton swab and then using a rotating motion to see if you can catch those scales in the fibres of the swab.
I thought the males tail looked a bit more concerning. The spikes appear to be crushed or damaged somewhat on his tail. You mentioned that they are rescues so hopefully with proper husbandry and diet that will resolve in time. I'm including my favourite care sheet on Uros. Although Uros don't tolerate prolonged high humidity in their environment it is perfectly acceptable and safe to give them temporary soaks for the purpose of hydration and medical treatment. You can add a few drops of glycerin to the water (available at drug stores) to help soften the retained skin which will help you remove it if possible. You may always have some shedding issues around that scar tissue.
