Leopard Gecko w/ a Red Eye

Question
Hello Tracie,

I came across your website, and I really like it.  And I like your passion to help animals. I would love to get your advice or opinion on the following:

Currently, I really don't think I can afford another vet visit for my leo at this time...I keep job hunting for higher pay..., but I know I need to take care of my leo's eye.... and I am wondering if I need either oral antibiotics or an eye ointment for her.

She is an Albino Leo. Last year she had a small infection on her mouth that cleared up very fast after the vet visit and taking a little bit of a prescribed antibiotic, back then.  At that time she weighed 60 grams.  She might weigh a little less right now.

Well, for a few months I had her housed separately from the male and other female gecko I have. While she was "living solo" I noticed her eye was irritated, but I increased her temps and kept her warm and the eye had seemed to have cleared up. However, now all 3 geckos are together. It is possible she could have been bitten by the male who is anxious to breed.
Her eye: well it is dark red. Not sure if the pupil stays dilated (I am trying to figure that out tonight).  I have put some water to moisten it, and then tried saline solution twice so far.  When I did that, I got some moist eye boogers" out with the water....and the saline seems to get her to open the eye a little if I take her out of the tank when I do it.  She shuts her eye most of the time, and sometimes rubs it on the side of the tank or floor which worries me that she will only irritate it more...so perhaps i am going to remove the substrate and put her on paper towel, and maybe separate her again?.  Do you think and eye ointment would work, or would she just lick it off? Is it safe if the gecko were to lick it? Or will I maybe need oral antibiotics.  I wish I could tell what kind of infection or whatever it is and that I can just make it go away.

Thank you very much. I try and get a picture if you need.
Thank you!!

Answer
Hello Crystal,

Cool, which website did you come across, my site about Adeno virus?
Yes a picture would be helpful, if you can manage one, thanks.
Yes, it is very possible that the male may have accidentally bitten her or scratched her while mating.  Is she gravid?
The saline solution would be very good to use if you can get it in her eye that is!
Definitely put her by herself for awhile along with paper towels for substrate since they are not dusty & can be changed out frequently.
The antibiotic eye ointment can be used in moderation.  If she licks some, a little would be ok, but if it is excessive that could be harmful.
If you feel it is a bad infection, I can direct you to a site online where you can order an antibiotic to help clear that up if you would like.  Baytril is a good broad spectrum antibiotic that is commonly used for reptiles.  I can dose it for you as well.
Let me know & I can send you the site.
