Gekko scraching her tank

Question
I have had my female leppard gekko now for 4 months without any problems.
Over the last week or so she has been scratching the glass in her tank in exactly the same place, as if she is trying to get out? She is still eating ok. Its as if she is trying to climb up the tank? Please help?

Answer
Hi John, Restless behaviour can arise when they are not happy with some aspect of the environment. The list of possibilities would be cage size (has she outgtrown the tank she was in), temperature gradient ( is she trying to find heat or get away from an over heated tank) lighting, nocturnal species instinctvely hide from bright light, are there adequate hide spots for her both warm and cool? Have you moved the tank from one room to another? When the scenery or light levels outside the tank change some reptiles will try to "return" to where they had been before. If the scratching is consistently in one spot I would try a visual block of that area with paper at her eye level around the tank. Leopards usually deal with the concept of glass fairly well but the light may be reflecting on that spot in such a way (from her inside viewpoint) to cause her some visual confusion.
The behaviour may simply be a product of her maturing and hormones, especially with the lengthening days which can prompt the breeding instinct.
