what kind of crab is it?

Question
well I have to get this crab for a project I'm doing and I don't really know what kind it is... it has a blue back and neon orange legs, the people at the store say it's a moon crab, and that it eats fruit, so I was wondering if you could tell me if that really is what it is, and alittle bit more about it please.

Answer
Hey Kat,
I don't really know too much about crabs, but I do know a few things about moon crabs (the people at the store were right, it's a moon crab).

They need to have access to both fresh and salt water, I'm guessing a good tank set up to do this would be to fill the tank (a ten gallon could hold 2 or 3 crabs...the more crabs, the more fighting) with sand, and make a slope down to about 3 or 4 inches deep. Have this be salt water since it will be mixed with sand. Then have an additional bowl on the flat land area filled with fresh water. Without water, their lungs dry out and they die, they need to keep their lungs wet.
They enjoy digging burrows in the sand, and at night (I guess they are nocturnal?) they forrage for food. They are omnivourous, and will eat apple, potatoe, small amounts of raw fish, live crickets, and even fich flakes. You can also of course buy some crab food, but these are just some foods they enjoy. =D
They need a temperature of 75 to 80 degrees and 75% humidity.

These guys sound like a pain to take care of, make sure you are going to be dedicated to this crab if you are going to have to keep it, you don't want to get stuck with a pet you don't really want. It also sounds like the stuff you will need to keep the temp. up and the humidity right will be a little expensive, and thats not including the tank and sand and food. ((I'm only saying this because you said it was for a project, it's nothing personal or anything, I am just giving some tips...I give the same basic ones to anyone who is thinking about getting something they don't really know too much about.))

I think once you actually have all of the equipment, it should be rather easy to take care of the crab(s).

Good luck with your project, I hope everything goes well! I really hope this info helps you out, I mostly stick with fish and reptiles.
Best wishes! Chelsey
