Coachwhip Snake??

Question
I live in NW Albuquerque, NM.  A lot of construction across the road, dry, dusty, deserty invironment.  I have a lush to overgrown grassy and alomost tropical (roses, fruit trees, honey suckle) back yard with a pool.  Around noon, about 85 and sunny, this 48" tan snake ran across my son's feet while eating lunch.  While trying to trap the snake with a pool pole (of course screaming wife and two daughters ages 5 and 2) the little guy coiled and struck agressively enough that while aiming for his head I caught him mid-body.  Pretty sure he was not venomous due to the rounded head, no rattle and markings.  Just not sure exactly what it was though.  I have attached a picture to help.  Thanks--steve
