Question

ornate male uromastyx
I have a male ornate uro about 1 year old (although I am not sure.)  He is 10"
long and weighs 3.3 oz. His housing temp range is 110 degrees to 80
degrees with a large shallow rock cave for shelter and millet seed for
substrate. His diet includes field greens or collard, mustard greens daily.
Frozen veggies couple times a week a few crickets every two weeks. I
sprinkle a calcium supplement with D3 once a week.
Here is my concern. When I bought him back in April he had a tiny boney
protrusion  on the top of his spine between his back legs. Now I have noticed
another one along the spine between his front legs. He does not seem to
bothered at all when I rub them. He also has been having a fine white sandy
looking buildup around his nostrils which falls off when I brush it with my
finger. He behaves the same and is interested in eating. He is housed with a
slightly larger ornate female and a very small mali uro but they all get along
fine. I noticed the white stuff on the other two today.
Any thoughts?
Thank-you for your time : )

Answer
Hello Katheryn,

There are a few things that need to be addressed.
The basking temps need to come up quite a bit.  They are recommended at 120-130 for the basking temps & then a cooler end gradient around 80 or so.
The diet regime sounds fine, though he needs calcium more often than once a week.  He is an adult but has been stunted some, so, for now, I would include calcium with D3 4 times per week right now.
The bumps along the spine are most likely from metabolic bone disease which are basically bony protrusions.  If he is in early stage this can be fixed, but you need to fix it quickly before he starts to have more bone deviations.
Are you using a UVB light?  If not, he absolutely needs one.  You can use the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb NOT the coil.  Stay away from the Reptiglo 10 tube bulb or the compacts, either one.
Or you can get a Mercury Vapor bulb.  Two of the best ones are either the Megaray or the T-rex active UV heat.
The white sandy buildup could be salt deposit buildup that sometimes happens with iguanas, too.
What do you measure your temps with, a stick on thermometer, a digital probe or a temp gun?
Let's get your lighting & heating up to par.  :-))
