Question
I have a friend who got a savannah at a local reptile show on 2/15/09 he was eating good until about a week ago. Now he wont eat a thing. What can we do he is bigger about a foot or so. i have 2 babies about 6 in. I've kept alive since October, but they never ate for me now the smallest is eating pinkies. What can he do he tried can cat food in a syringe, pinkies and crickets. I also have a sulcata hes 4 months old. I have him in timothy hay with a 100 watt bulb and a uvb light on him. What's the best way to give them their vitamins and calcium? What supplements do they get? Is their anything you have found they prefer over other things?

Answer
OK, the bigger sav. needs to be checked for parasites.  It is almost certainly wild caught and is probably having a parasite bloom related to all the stress of the new environment.  Anorexia is a symptom, not a disease.  Find out why it doesn't want to eat.  A fecal float test performed by a vet is the best place to start.  I'd recommend the same for the babies.

The tortoise set-up sounds good.  The best way to provide vitamins and minerals is through diet.  Mazuri makes a tortoise diet (dry food) which is well balanced and it can be supplemented with fresh veggies to help get the tort interested.  No high protein stuff (dog food, meat, etc) and not much high sugar stuff (fruits) either for spur-thighs.  I'm sure there are some good care sheets available on-line.  Read 8 of them and see what they all agree on.  Don't take any one as the gospel.
