Uromastyx diet

Question
Hello, and thanks for helping me on this.  I'm a science teacher that obtained a male and female Uromastyx niger.  The man that sold them to me told me that they only eat greens (with vitamins), and I've fed them clean dandelion heads, which they love.  However, I have read online that they also like crickets and mealworms, and tried those, which they devoured.  Are Uromastyx omnivores or herbivores, usually?  Is it okay to feed them protein, or should I limit it?

Answer
Hello Thea,

Well, they are "true" herbivores, though, you can occasionally throw in some feeders, maybe once a week at the most.  They can get their protein sources through beans & lentils.  The only beans that they cannot have are kidney beans.
So, greens & veggies such as squash varieties, bell pepper varieties, pieces of fruit from time to time, lentils & beans that are cooked, that is plenty to give them a good mix of protein.
Feeding high protein sources such as feeders on a regular basis, just is not good for them, it is too hard on their kidneys.  There is nothing wrong with a few weekly.
What are you keeping their temperatures at?
