Milk Snake Behavior

Question
I was wondering if it is normal for milk snakes appx 6 months to randomly strike at the opposite side of the tank instead of striking at the food item (still alive just stunned) he just started this the last time I fed him and normally he is not aggressive at all he normally goes into run away mode rather than strike mode.

Answer
Well, there are a few possibilities.  First, ensure the cage is very clean--residual scents could be confusing.  Second, ensure he doesn't have retained eye caps that could be impairing his vision.

Another possibility is that he is, for some reason, a bit more stressed than usual (has he been moved, handled different, cage furniture different, lack of hide, etc?)  This could cause him to strike defensively.

Milk snakes can be flighty animals (though not all individuals are).

Is he still eating?  If so, I would not be too concerned.  Just make sure he has an appropriate single-entrance hide, and address any of the above issues, if they exist.
