Question
Hi, can my iguana get pregnant at a year and a half old? I have a male and a female iguana, virus (male), and GG (female). I`m not positive if she is pregnant, because her belly size seems to change every day. One day shes skinny, then shes very round. but there is constant digging in the cage. i made her a proper egging spot, but both the male and female seem to dig around the box, and not go in it. i introduced her to the box, she went in, checked it out, then came back out, and hasnt gone in since.  is it normal for the male to help her dig?  im not quiet sure what question im asking but any advise would help, becuase i worry about her, beccause i heard they can get egg bound and die.. would an iguana keep the eggs in her, even if there is a proper egging spot?

Answer
Hi Amanda, Green iguanas can become sexually mature at that age although it tends to also be a function of size as well as age. The male does not assist in creating the nest spot. There are a number of factors that can contribute to egg laying problems but a major one is calcium deficiency. Make sure her diet is contains calcium rich greens with added supplements.
I am including a link to a reply by well known reptile vet Dr. Margaret Wissman to a question about green iguana egg laying problems. She discusses the issue quite thoroughly and explains the various scenarios that may occur and  why it can be a difficult diagnosis to make, even for vets.
