Question
We have heard that female iguana's can impregnate themselves. Is this true?

Answer
Hi Troy,

I think you might be referring to parthenogenesis. This is the process where female ova are able to develop into embryos without fertilization. The offspring are essentially clones of the mother and are all female.
I have not heard of parthenogenesis being discovered in the green iguana. The last major discovery, to my knowledge, was in the Komodo dragon. It is well known to occur in several smaller species of lizard as well.
I did a search using using "iguana" and "parthenogenesis" but came up with nothing. It was mentioned in a couple forums by hobbyists but with no references or sources cited. I found no scientific, academic or zoological papers on the subject.
