Leopard Gecko with swollen left

Question
QUESTION: Hello Tracie,

I have a Leopard Gecko between 7-10 years ol and weighs 58 grams.   We noticed a few day ago that its left eye is swollen.  Its appears to be getting bigger, his eye doesn't open all the way and kind of goes to his jaw.  He isn't interested in eating much.  He did shed a few days before this, so we thought some of the shed didn't come all the way off, but then we also noticed he had two crickets that were left in with him also.  So we aren't sure which it is, or if he got a piece of the reptisand in his eye.  We are guessing it is some kind of infection.  The temp in his terrarium is between 82-87.

We seen one of your other posting of something similar.  We are getting some chicken baby food to feed him.  How much should we feed him and how often?  We ordered the acidophiliz and benebac from your site with a syringe.  Which one is better and how much should we give and how often?  We also ordered some Baytril liquid, how much and how often should we give it to him?  We ordered all this stuff so we would have it if you recommended it or is there something else we should do?

What do you recommend using in the bottom of the terrarium?  We have repetasand in there now, but have read that can be bad for them.  We have read that slate is a good choice to go with, but would like you opinion.

ANSWER: Hello Connie,

Do you have any pictures of your gecko?  He sounds like he is pretty good sized at 58 grams.
I would most definitely take out the reptisand, just to eliminate that possibility of loose sand/substrate infecting his eye.
They can get retained shed on the eye which will cause a lot of issues such as bacterial infections & blindness.
Do you have a moist humid hide/cave for him also on the warm side of the tank?
I would increase the warm side of his tank to a range of 85-90 with a cooler end around 78-80.  The extra heat can help boost the immune system for him.
The slate is fine for him, or you can use felt too, that is what I have used in the past.
The chicken baby food would be great to help supplement him right now if he is not eating.  I would start with .5ml to 1ml range.
Let me know when you get the Baytril & I will help you dose it for him.  You can give that for a 7-10 day period to see if that helps out.
The acidophiliz is well tolerated since it is a liquid.  You can give that by itself or mix it with the food.  The benebac gel is well liked & you can add that to his food too.  You can rotate each probiotic to see which he tends to prefer.
Giving probiotics is a good idea while he is on medication.  I would give them during the medication as well as up to 2 weeks following the last dose of medication.

How did you hear about my site?  I will get that sent out for you quickly.  :-)

Let me know how he is doing.

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,

Yes, he does have a shed box that he goes into when he sheds.  We keep it moist all the time and have been changing the moss stuff thats inside to make sure it stays clean.

My husband is going tonight to get some slate to put in the bottom of his terrarium.  That will make it a lot easier to clean also.

I am glad that I decided to get both kinds of the probiotic.  I will rotate them like you suggested.  You told us how long to give him the probiotics, but you didn't tell us how much to give him per day.

I will let you know when we get the Baytril, so you can give us the correct dosage.

I really thank you for all of your help.  I am going to try to attach two pictures of our gecko. Please let me know if you don't get the pictures, I am not very good at this.

We were trying to find out information about what could be wrong with our gecko, when we found one that was very similar.  So we decided to send you an email.  Thank you again, Connie

ANSWER: Hello Connie,

Poor guy, his eye does look infected!  What are you putting on or in his eye to help clear that up?  You can try using some sterile saline solution to try & wash his eye out with to help.  The Baytril will hopefully help with his infection too.
I am glad that you found me, I will help you as much as I can for you little one.
The moss is fine, as long as it is kept moist daily.   The slate should do well for him, too.
Sure, you can give just a pea sized amount of the benebac gel & you can give .5ml of acidophiliz.  They can be given daily.  I hope that he likes them!
Great, I hope he gets the Baytril soon.
Do you use a basking light also?
Let me know how he is doing!

QUESTION: Hello Tracie, Do you think that it is a cricket bite?  Otherwise, what do you think it is?  We have Sterile Saline for sensitive eyes for when I wear my contacts.  We used that last night on his eye, he didn't seem to mind it.  Is that kind going to be ok?  I looked and couldn't find anything else that said sterile saline solution.  If you know of something better, please let me know.  We lightly rubbed or held a warm washcloth on it and he didn't seem to mind that.  Then we put some triple antibacterial stuff on it and he didn't like that, so we used the warm rag to kind of get it off.

I tried feeding him some of the chicken & chicken gravy baby food, he ate a little bit, but I guess some is better then none.  I will try again a little later.

My husband picked up the slate and felt for the bottom of his terrarium, so later this evening we will be getting the reptisand out of there and the slate put in.

Thank you very much for all your help.  I sure hope the Baytril gets here soon.  If you think of anything else we should do, please let me know.

Answer
Hello Connie,

I hope it isn't a cricket bite.  How long do you leave the crickets in with him?
The contact sterile saline for his eyes are fine.  That will be ok.  You can try using a warm tea bag on his eye at night, to help with swelling.  Which antibiotic ointment did you use on his eye?  It may not be real good for the eye though if it is like the neosporin.

That is great you got some felt, as well as some slate.  That will work out really nicely for him.  Where did you order the Baytril from?
I hope he is doing well tonight.
At least he seemed to like the chicken baby food a little bit.
