Question
i live on bonaire, and i found a lizzard that seems to be evolving into a snake. its about 2 inches long, its black with  a white stripe on both sides of its body. it has legs, but it does not use them to move, instead it moves like a snake would. i have no idea what this is, nor could i find any picture of it on the Internet. could this be a new species ?

Answer
Peter,

There are many species of burrowing lizards found thoughout the world.  It's hard to find info on them because they themselves are hard to find!  There are species such as the one you found which have legs but do use them, there are species missing the front legs only and there are also legless lizards.  It is possible you found a new species (they are found nearly every day).  But most likely it has been catagorized before.  You should contact the Biology department of the nearest university for help.  Take plenty of pictures (color) and try to either get measurements or place a unit of reference in the shot w/ the animal (rulers work great).  Pics of the belly are sometimes helpful as well.  Hope this helps!
