HELP ! My uromastyx is sick.

Question
I have had a male uromastyx for 7 years without any health problems.  Recently, around January his appetite changed and he would not eat which was unusual for him.  I took him to thee vet and had blood work drawn which came out negative for any infection, as well as a fecal sample was tested for pun worms and came back negative. At the time of the visit he was responsive and moved around quite a bit. He started taking small bites here and there of his favorites (bananas, berries) but nothing significant.

I took him back to the vet three weeks ago because he still would not eat.  Again he was responsive and alert but not interested in food.  The vet thought that maybe he was in mating mode like others reptiles and not interested in food.  It has been three months and it does not seem normal at all.  I fear the worst if I just sit and wait for a change.

He is still responsive today, but will not eat.He actually runs away to his cave when food is offered to him. This is really rae since he loved to be hand fed and came charging over to his food everyday. Each day I leave a fresh bowl of food in his enclosure which is 6 ft long by 3 ft high by 4 feet wide hoping he will eat. I am desperate to help this guy and do not know what else to do to help him.  I woulkd appreciate any advice you may have to help me help this guy.

Thank you.

Answer
Hello Trish,

Sorry to hear about your uro.
Well, have you changed anything in his tank recently?  That is great, a 6x3x4 is large.  What type of lighting are you using, such as the basking light & what type & brand of UVB lighting?
Are you supplementing calcium?  How often?  Does he eat greens & veggies also?
There is a product called Jumpstart that you can get from  www.reptilesupply.com  It is an appetite stimulant which could help him.  You mix up a small tiny pea sized amount & put that in with a slurry of greens & water & drip it onto his nose to see if he will eat any.
What do his stools look like, are his urates normal color?  How do his eyes look, are they bright or sunken in?
Let me know how things are going!
