Question
i have a madagasgar ground geko, about 9months old, large tank about 3.5ft. he hardly ever eats but didnt when we had him prob once every 2weeks if that but not lost weight, but not gained any either,he is lovely colour, never been lively, had florecent strip, heat, and light , reptile bark / soil mix subtrate, access to water and calcium powder, has hide outs hot/cold.i have today cleaned him out and replaced with layers newspaper and kitchen roll, hideouts and bulbs blew, so put a red 60w bulb in, tried him with calcium dusted fruit for change to see if will eat that, but cant sort lighting for few days will this be ok, since i have done all this today , he has actually wondered about and nibbled fruit and become lively now is in his hot hideout sleeping, seems so much happier, tomorrow going to get some fresh crickets try him with them in his new style home see if that be ok, my bro keeps a cameleon and thinks it was prob not warm enough and is noe so more comfortable, my house is a cold home any way espec at night. sorry if this makes little sense tried to include as much info as poss.  will geko be ok with just a 60w red bulb and kitchen roll sustrate, and friut as PART of there diet.  thanks

Answer
You didn't say what temperature the tank was at, if it was over 85 F it was too hot.  And being a ground gecko, it was probably too bright during the day.  The fluorescent strip is great as long as it produces UVB and is less than 6 months old, Reptisun 10.0 or Exoterra Repti-glo 8.0 are best choices.  Night time will require a temp of 70 so you will need that red light then, or a ceramic heat emitter for winter.  Moisture is very necessary so a mixture of sphagnum moss and chilldren's playsand kept moist but not real wet will make your gecko very happy.
