Question
I have descided after loosing my oscar fish, that I raised as a baby and treated like a son, that I am done with animals that die before I do. So I'm concidering purchasing a turtle (or lizard, I don't want a snake. . .because I hear some can try to eat me. I want something with personality and one that would like to be held. So I thought that you could give me a suggestion as to which kind I should get. I was thinking a 'Black-Knobbed Sawback Map Turtle'. Because they look pretty amazing. But what would you suggest? I want a pet that will out live me. I also like BIG animals. Any suggestions?

Answer
No reptile "likes" to be held.  Turtles are long-lived but they are not "easy" to care for.  A tortoise is slighty easier but many of the long lived ones get BIG, so choose carefully!  A bearded dragon might work for you but life span is still only 20 years or so.  Leopard geckos can live over 20 years and are fairly easy and tameable.  I'd suggest a boa constrictor as they tolerate handling, live long, and wouldn't get big enough to eat you, but you ruled out snakes...
