Question

egg
Hello,i just recently found an egg and i need to know what egg it is.I asked a few people and they said its a snake egg and some say its a bird egg so if you could please help me out,iam just curious.

Answer
That's definitely a bird's egg.  Bird's eggs are hard-shelled, and have a narrow end and a wide end.  This helps prevent the egg from rolling away, and helps the mother bird keep the eggs arranged in her nest to provide maximum warmth for them.  The air pocket is at the wide end of the egg.  The mother bird turns and rearranges the eggs often, to keep membranes from sticking within the egg.

Reptile eggs can be hard-shelled or leathery, but they are either round, or oblong, with no difference in size between one end of the egg and the other.  Snake eggs in particular are oblong and leathery (soft) to the touch, not hard-shelled.  Reptile eggs are never turned, and the air pocket simply forms on whatever side happens to be on top.

It's also the right season for birds to begin laying their eggs, but it's a bit too early for reptiles, at least in temperate areas.  Amphibians and reptiles are breeding right now, and for reptiles, most eggs will be laid next month, or the month after that.  (My collection of over 20 female snakes has produced only 3 clutches so far, and they are a tropical species that is kept warm inside).  Reptiles seek to lay eggs when temperatures in the soil are right for incubation (between 70 and 80 degrees for most temperate species).
