Question

Brax
Hi! Its Jenn.. sorry its been a while since I replied with photos.. things have been hectic over the holidays. I had to ask this as a new question as the forum said I had submitted too many followups. Also, about the pictures this was from a few weeks ago and doesn't reflect the new issue with his eyes.

Brax (our dragon)is still being syringe fed and has not lost any weight but really not gained any noticeable amount either. He is through his second round of parasite meds and will be doing his final round just after New Years. He is still lethargic but when picked up will flail his legs and arms a bit trying to steady himself. The new concern we have is that he seems to now have trouble opening his eyes. I did some research online and we think he might have conjunctivitis. The answers were conflicting from what I saw online however.. some said its a lack of UVB and others that it was too much exposure to UVB. After reading the first bit of info suggesting it might be a lack of we went out and bought a compact top terrarium canopy light and new desert 26W 10.0 compact bulb. We tried to find Repto-Sun as it seems to be the recommended brand but all we have in the city is ExoTerra which we bought (both the lamp and bulb are this brand). We mounted it above his heated basking rock this afternoon and he's been basking for about an hour and a half to two hours.
We've also been wiping Brax's eyes with a warm, damp cloth and it seems there is a brown-ish crust/goober in his eyes. He also has quite dark circles underneath his eyes too.
What is your stance on the cause of conjunctivitis? Is this seemingly what is wrong with him? He has had moments of activity where he has walked up to the glass in his cage and blinked his eyes under the lids seemingly (to me) trying to open his eyes. What do you suggest we do to treat this? We are extremely worried for his wellbeing and don't want him to suffer in any way.

Thanks!

Jenn :)

Answer
Hello Jenn,

I hate to have to tell you this, but the compact/coil lights will cause PKC or photokerato-conjunctivitis so you will need to turn that light off & try to return it.
So, to help him recover as quickly as possible, find some sterile saline solution to put in his eyes & soak him in a daily bath.  Try to get him to take in several mls of oral fluids daily.
Is he eating anything at all?
The proper light that you will need to get is the Reptisun 10 tube bulb.  I realize being in Canada is harder, so you will need to order from online.

Here is a site that ships to Canada.

Here are a couple of links for the correct light, just check your light fixture to get the proper one to fit the light.

There are also a couple of other lengths as well so you can check around on the site.  That is the ONLY brand to get.  Please do not get any of the other brands, they will be a waste of your money.

Until then, just keep him under a nice bright white light at optimal temperatures.  Hopefully you have caught it in time & the damage will be minimal.  I am sorry that this has happened to him.
Let me know how he is doing.
