Question
Hello, i have recently gained two bearded dragons from a friend who could no longer give them the care they needed. The male is approx 2yrs old and female approx 1 year. they are both underweight but the female more so. When we got them they was both eating but the female has now stopped. the male is showing signs of wanting to mate but neither are in good codition. i have just seperated them today to see if this wll get the female to eat. They are both very small in length for there age.

My question is what can i do to try to get the female eating. I have tried cucumber, crickets and marioworms so far. I will be getting some broccoli, kale, carrots and wax worms when i go shopping. I have heard that Mealworms are not too good for them? Our nearest Rep vet is 45 mins away so would like to try all i can before taking her on the long journey. Any advice would be brill.
Thank you.

Answer
Hello Charlotte,

Are you housing them together?
If so, I would try to get a set up for each of them.  Housing a male & female together is usually pretty stressful for them, especially during mating season.  They are probably both small due to being housed together & not receiving the proper nutrition.

What is your tank setup consist of?
Do you or are you planning on using any UVB light?  If so, what type & brand do you have?
I would steer away from kale & broccoli on a regular basis as they are higher oxalate greens/veggies which will bind calcium absorption.
Try mustard greens, collard greens or turnip greens for staples.  You can use squash varieties for the veggies, as well as bell peppers some also.
Mealworms are not a good staple for them, no.  They have too hard of outer shell & their meat to shell ratio is not the best plus they tend to be fattier too.
What are the temperatures in the tank?  What type of thermometer are you using?
They will both need calcium 2-3 times per week as well.
